Once a political and linguistic border the “Rennsteig” has turned into a well developed walking trail in recent times. The whole trail with its length of 168.3km is completely marked with a white “R” on signposts or simply on trees. Beside the trail places of historical, geological and botanical interest are waiting to be discovered.
But there are also many cultural highlights nearby, the towns of Eisenach (with the famous Wartburg where Martin Luther translated the Holy Bible), Meiningen with its world-famous theatre, Schmalkalden ( with many old half-timbered houses in the city centre) Suhl with a few shopping malls and Sonneberg with its fine toy museum. All these places are within a distance of about 50km from Oberhof – easy to reach.
